Cobbled charm

WHO IS kidding who over this surfacing of Portland Square, Workington ?

I am concerned with preserving what little heritage we have left in Workington.

We are told that to replace the existing cobblestones cannot be considered and that these must be replaced with modern materials, eg setts/Tarmac, which although attractive and serviceable, would be out of character with the area.

On challenging this statement at a recent meeting, the county council representatives said that it was not the law of the land and would therefore not be illegal.

I believe the people of Workington should challenge the officials of the county highways department who are responsible for this decision.

Let us try to maintain some of our town’s old and charming character in the shape of one rare, genuine Georgian square.
