REIGNING North Lancashire and Cumbria champions Workington continued their revival after a defeat on opening day of the new season.
Last Saturday on home wicket they recorded their third win in a row - it was also their most convincing so far.
They made a declaration at 250-4 and didn’t need the extra time as they bowled out Duddon SC for just 80.
Workington had good runs spread through the order from Kristian Moffat (57no), Peter Chambers (52no), Simon Beare (45), Andrew Reed (40) and Callum Moffat (35).
Chambers, who has resumed his playing career after a near 20-year-break hit six fours and a six, reaching his his half century off only 43 deliveries.
Duddon never looked like getting near and were skittled in 34 overs with Kyle Galea (3-13), Matthew Gorley (3-17), Beare (2-15) and Simon James (2-16) sharing the wickets between them.
Cockermouth were another team among the runs but they had to settle for 15 points from their drawn game with Whitehaven.
Hugh Gimber (105), Ian Buchanan (54no) and Greg Platten (36) lifted Cockermouth to 243-4 but Whitehaven made a good fist of their response. At the close they had reached 202-6 led by pro Saliva Saman (50) and Andrew Kelly (49).
Keswick were involved in a cliff-hanger at Penrith.
The two shared almost 450 runs and the result could have gone any way before ending in a draw with the bulk of the points to Keswick.
Batting first the Lakes side raced to 225-6 in their 50 overs, desperate to kick-start their season with a win.
Glen Weightman (57), Stephen Hindmarch (45) and Neil Swainson (47no) were the main architects of the Keswick total with John Iniff (2-48) and Nick Tuer (2-57) the most successful Penrith bowlers.
In a nerve-jangling finale Penrith got to 224-8 at the close, largely through the efforts of professional Upul Fernando (90) and Alex Atkinson (63). Imran Khan took 3-62 for Keswick.
Millom suffered their first defeat when they went down by 48 runs at home to local rivals Furness in a low-scoring game.
The visitors would not have been over-confident after making only 149-6 with top-score coming from Majid Jahangir (43). Dominic Connor (4-25) was Millom’s most successful bowler.
Majid was also the most successful bowler for Furness as he took 4-38 and with good support from Mike Daly (3-23) they reduced Millom to 101 all out. Connor top-scored with 28.
Cleator’s in-form professional Paul Duffett hit another ton but it wasn’t enough as Carlisle found late resistance to earn 11 points from the draw.
Simon Plevin was unbeaten on 51 batting at number ten for Carlisle as they responded with 176-8, but had looked doomed earlier when Dave Rooney (4-40) and Duffett (3-70) got among the wickets.
Duffett had made 119 not out in a Cleator total of 218-7 with the next best knock from Robert Mason (28). Professional Usman Saeed took 3-54 and then made 30 for Carlisle.
In the other premier game Dalton squeezed home to a one-wicket win against Haverigg in a low scoring contest.
Willem Van Zyl took 4-39 for Dalton as the visitors were bowled out for 113 and then Justin Quint top-scored with 40 as Dalton limped home on 116-9.
There was a shock for Appleby Eden in division one when they went down by 63 runs at home to Workington Seconds.
The West Cumbrians made 191-6 with the major contributions coming from Stephen Miller (63) and Andrew Whinn (57).
Five Workington bowlers shared the wickets among them as Appleby were dismissed for 128 with new professional Tillakaratne Sampath top-scoring on a mere 16.
Wigton, bidding to make a quick return to the premier, were comfortable eight-wicket winners at home to Hawcoat Park.
They dismissed the visitors for 112 (Malik 4-19) and then raced to victory on 114-2 with Tom Fleming unbeaten on 65.
Lindal Moor would also like to get back to the top flight as quickly as possible and they beat Lanercost, though they had to work hard for it.
Colin Knight took 5-25 as Lanercost were bowled out for 116 and Tom Haywards (27) top-scored in a scratchy, but winning response of 117-7.
Egremont are enjoying a better season and they won again, this time at Keswick Seconds.
Paul Ireland top-scored with 45 in Keswick’s total of 145 with Joe Bostock taking 4-45 for Egremont.
Steve Hodgson scored 35 in Egremont’s winning response of 146-8.
Cleator Seconds lost at Kirkby after Dave Mossop (75) and Stephen Wishart (54) had batted well in a total of 208-6. The home side responded with 210-3.
And in the other division one game Vickerstown (189-8) drew with Ulverston (164-9).
