Johnson stays 100 per cent

WORKINGTON’S Mark Johnson is the only summer league player to hold a 100 per cent record of five straight wins.

Johnson caught up by completing three fixtures of late defeating Cleator Moor’s John Madine 4-0 before conceding his first frames of the campaign in 3-1 wins over Maryport’s Craig Denwood and Workington’s Paul Johnston.

Johnson now holds a five-point lead in the second tier of summer individual snooker.

Whitehaven’s Ryan Henry is becoming a bit of a draw specialist earning 2-2 draws against Maryport’s Richard Lewthwaite having battled back from 2-0 down and Shane Kane.

Kane faired better with a 2-2 result away to Paul Johnston, coming back from a two-frame deficit.

Denwood earned his first win of the season in beating Seaton’s Shaun Moore 3-1 despite losing the opening frame.

Cleator Moor’s Alex Chiesa defeated Lewthwaite 4-0 and remains in second, three points clear of Moore.

In the top flight Whitehaven’s Robert Sim continued to sweep his opponents aside with three more 4-0 victories within a week.

First victim was Workington’s Barry Collins, Sim making a 34 break. Next was Dave Chapman of Workington with Sim accumulating breaks of 45, 43, 41 and 31.

Finally Mike Dawson, also of Workington, went down without a frame although there were no breaks above 30 in a tighter fixture than the previous two.

Sim is a massive 18 points clear at the top but has been getting through a lot of fixtures.

Collins battled back to earn a 2-2 draw against Maryport’s Mike Park after going 2-0 down.

Park lost 3-1 to Ryan Ismay also from Maryport with the winner making breaks of 40 and 30 and holds third.

Workington’s Alan Moore had a solid 4-0 victory over Seaton’s Paul Mostyn after a tight opening frame and remains in second. Mostyn had an improved result when he battled back from 2-0 down to Chapman.

Workington’s Clive Lister earned his first summer league victory and lifted himself off the bottom of the table when he had a valuable 4-0 win over Chapman where the opening three frames were tight before Lister eased away in the final one.

In the singles knockout tournament Alan Moore and Robert Sim went head to head in a preliminary round tie.

Moore took the opening frame from Sim quite comfortably before the Whitehaven cueist battled back to snatch the second after requiring a snooker and the last five remaining colours.

The deciding frame saw Moore compile a potential frame winning break of 44 but Sim managed to claim his place in the first round by sinking the pink.

Craig Denwood booked his place in the quarter-finals when he came back from losing the first frame to win 2-1.

Alex Chiesa inflicted a first defeat of the season upon division two leader Mark Johnson to also go into the quarters.
