Dinuk top NLC bowler

KESWICK cricketer Dinuk Hettiarachchi topped the North Lancashire & Cumbria premier division bowling average for the 2008 season.

The professional finished with an average of 9.36 having taken 55 wickets at the cost of 515 runs, a tally which included taking five wickets in an innings on five occasions.

Top amateur in the bowling averages was David Rooney, of Cleator, while the Winning Line Trophy for best wicketkeeper in the premier division goes to Whitehaven’s Gareth Coward.

The premier batting averages were headed by pro Majid Jehangir, of Furness, with 81.45. In 15 innings – including four not outs – he scored 896 runs including a top score of 144no. The top amateur was Dalton’s Justin Quint.

Rooney also took the North West Evening Mail Award for premier players’ player. Workington’s Simon James was the runner-up.

The R Ashburner Tony for the players’ U21 player went to Alex Atkinson, of Penrith. Cockermouth’s Greg Platten was runner-up.

In division one Workington’s Simon Bragg took the Malcolm Beaty Wicketkeeper Award. He took 15 catches and made eight stumpings.

Wigton’s Bobby Sherlock topped the division’s batting averages with 64. He scored 640 runs in 13 innings with three not outs. Sherlock also won the FH Moore Award for players’ player.

Lindal Moor’s Colin Knight was the top bowler with 4.87 – 45 wickets, 219 runs.
