RU clubs join forces

TWO Allerdale rugby union clubs are joining forces in the hope of having a big impact in a youth league.

Workington Zebras and Aspatria have linked up in the North East and Cumbria U18 Sunday League.

Zebras have been short of replacements and with the opposition able to bring on fresh legs at critical times, it was hard going.

Now with two squads to work from the new-look side has high hopes of creating an impression in the league.

Aspatria had not entered a league for the 2008/09 season.

Matches will be played at Zebras’ Ellis Sports Ground with training sessions held alternately in Aspatria and Workington.

The side was unlucky not to win at Ponteland in their first combined effort on Sunday.

The West Cumbrians had a good amount of possession and went in front with a penalty from Adam Birkett.

Ponteland responded well, and following a series of phases of play, involving the whole of their back line, they scored a try.

The Cumbrians put Ponteland under severe pressure for a good 10-minute spell and were rewarded with a try from Nicky Carter.

The second half was evenly matched with both sides failing to capitalise on good possession and showing good defence. However, Ponteland managed to break through the Cumbrian defence and scored close to the touch line with 15 minutes remaining to earn a 10-8 win.
