The game started with some good physical defence from both teams before good hands saw Seaton’s Matthew Haigh score to give them a 4-0 lead. The Glasson players performed really well against an older, bigger and stronger Egremont team, and despite atrocious weather conditions both teams played some entertaining rugby.
U16s Seaton 42
Salterbeck 16
On the next attack Seaton spilled the ball and a long-range effort gave Salterbeck a 6-4 lead.
More good hands from Seaton saw tries from Matt Parker, James Wilson and Nathan Kirkbride, with Stephen Clarke adding two conversions.
Salterbeck scored just before half-time to trail 20-10 at the break. Seaton started the second half well and Haigh, Wilson and Parker each scored their second tries, and with Clarke adding two conversions they led 36-10. Salterbeck would not lie down and scored again before Seaton’s Jon Richardson scored a great solo effort to end an entertaining game.
Glasson 4
Egremont 36
The Glasson team again worked hard for one another in defence, but their attacking options were restricted by numerous handling errors and taking the wrong options.
That said a mark of the teams improvement was that they held Egremont to within 32 points, whereas the last time these two teams met, the margin was 56 points.
The sole Glasson try scorer was Joe Gallimore who showed strength and determination by driving over the line from six metres out.
Glasson broke the Egremont defensive line several times, with Thomas Connolly making large gains down the left hand side.
All the players contributed to a solid team performance, with the man-of-the-match awards going to Gary Tierney for his all-round work rate and enthusiasm.
