Tinkler withdraws airport plan

CUMBRIAN haulage boss Andrew Tinkler has withdrawn his £35m plan to transform Carlisle Airport.

The Stobart boss said a Government decision to call a public inquiry forced him to shelve his vision to create a thriving freight and passenger hub.

The move means there are no proposals on the table to improve the airfield, which loses approximately £1m a year.

It also reopens the prospect of the Stobart haulage empire leaving the county for Cheshire, taking with it hundreds of jobs.

Mr Tinkler said: “It is with great regret that we have had to pull this application.

“It is due to the ‘calling-in’ of the application for a public inquiry.”

Mr Tinkler will meet Cumbria County Council, Carlisle City Council and regeneration officials on Monday.
