CHILDREN from across West Cumbria have taken part in a technology challenge.
They had to make a bridge out of straws, card, cotton, sticky tape and drawing pins, at the event, held at Lakes College West Cumbria and organised by the Rotary club.
There were 24 teams of four youngsters from Workington’s Southfield Technology College, Workington, Keswick School, Cockermouth School, St Benedict’s School, Whitehaven and the Lillyhall college competing.
The event is now in its fourth year.
Colin Doorbar, of Workington Rotary, said: "The children get a lot of enjoyment out of it. It is a challenge because they don’t know what they are going to be making before they get here."
The event was split into three sections - basic, intermediate and advanced.
Key stage five children in the advanced section had to build a suspension bridge capable of lifting up a kilogram weight, while key stage three children competing in the basic class had to produce a bridge capable of holding the weight as it was dragged over the bridge.
Zael Ligertwood, 13, of Keswick School said: "We’ve had a really good time today.
"It was hard because we didn’t know what we would have to do, but we got down to the job in hand and I think our bridge is pretty good."
