BALLROOM dresses with a twist are on display in Workington town centre to promote the town’s Paint The Town Red festival in August.
Students from Lakes College West Cumbria, Lillyhall, created the dresses from old Times & Star newspapers and red plastic which was donated by Alcan.
The Times & Star and Alcan are sponsoring the Paint The Town Red festival on Saturday, August 30.
The dresses, which are mounted on mannequins borrowed from Debenhams, are on display in the shop window of the former Shoe Express on Ivison Lane.
Art tutor Shona Jones said: “It’s a shame that some shops are empty. If this encourages people to come into the town then the students are delighted to help in any way they can.”
The dresses will be on display until the day of the festival.
Students involved in the project include Laura Poulson, 19, Anne-Marie Gibson, 18, Neysa and Pippa Cahill, 17, and Mikey Shepherd, 21.
Laura said: “Getting the opportunity to use something as simple as newspaper builds confidence and it’s great fun too.”
