Sculptures to hail traditional game

WORKINGTON’S Uppies and Downies mass football game is to be immortalised in two pieces of public art work for the town.
Two statues, each portraying three players tussling for the ball, are being made by Maryport sculptor Colin Telfer.
One of them, representing the Downies, will be positioned near the harbour.
The other will be installed on Uppies territory at Hall Park.
The sculptures, which incorporate vandal-proof features, are being made by Mr Telfer in his workshop in John Street, Maryport.
He has almost finished the Downies statue, which will have a red finish.
The sculpture representing the Uppies, who were traditionally miners, will be in black.
The resin figures will be on concrete bases which will be built up to represent the sloping ground on which the Easter games take place.
Mr Telfer said: “This is the biggest challenge I have ever taken on. I have never done a sculpture with so much movement.”
Mr Telfer is well-known for his statues of miners, one of which is in his home village of Flimby.
