A LADIES’ day at Workington’s Derwent Park raised funds for men’s cancer charity Orchid.

An auction and stand-up bingo session got the women into the spirit of the day before the champagne-sipping and dancing started.

Organiser Dawn Walker said they had received such good feedback from the last ladies’ day that they decided to hold another and raise more funds for charity.

She said: “The day was absolutely fantastic.

“We had great support from people and raised a lot of money.”

More than £600 worth of quiz and raffle prizes were donated by local businesses.

Dawn said: “They have been brilliant. A big thank you goes to Genesis Home Appliances who donated a £100 prize and all the other businesses which have been so generous.”

Auction items included Workington Town T-shirts and a signed Town rugby ball.

This year’s ladies’ day saw a change of charity in a bid to raise awareness of men’s cancer.

Dawn explained: “I lost a close friend to breast cancer and in the past we held ladies’ day to raise cash for that, but this year we decided to get the lads involved and bring men’s cancer to the forefront instead.”

The £1,500 total raised from the event will go to Orchid, Town’s youth development team and Maryport Coastguard.
