Year five and six pupils, aged nine to 11, had been doing research on the world wars and the meaning of Remembrance Day.

Their teacher, Kelly Bowe, said the result was a community assembly, attended by about 40 villagers. The children recited the poem In Flanders Fields.

Mrs Bowe said the pupils remembered soldiers of the past and those who are serving abroad today.

She said: “We linked it with the Help for Heroes appeal and the fact that the X Factor contestants have released a CD of Mariah Carey’s Hero song. All proceeds are going to Help for Heroes, a charity set up to help soldiers fighting in wars now.”
