Five-year wait before railway upgrades

IMPROVEMENTS to Maryport railway station and the raising of a low platform at Flimby are at least five years away.

The work, included in plans to re-signal the coastal railway line, would include the building of a second platform at Maryport.

But Network Rail this week said the starting date would depend on talks with the Sellafield nuclear site about its rail needs, and it was likely that any work would be carried out between 2014 and 2020.

A Network Rail spokesman said there were several impractical, low platforms along the Carlisle-Barrow coast line which would be considered for an upgrade.
