HAVE YOUR SAY: First Robin Rigg turbine up
Last updated 12:37, Tuesday, 11 November 2008
THE first Robin Rigg turbine has been erected off the coast of Maryport.
It is one of 60 420ft turbines that will be erected 7.5 miles off the west coast and was put up on Wednesday.
Work began on Robin Rigg, owned by energy firm E.On, early last year and the turbines are expected to start generating power next summer.
Two barges are now on site and will lift more turbines onto foundations.
Ian Johnson, project manager, said: “It’s a fantastic sight on the Solway at the moment with a fleet of vessels putting in foundations, turbines and cables.
"It’s starting to look like a windfarm for the first time. With so many boats on the water we’re certainly hopeful that we can get back on schedule for the project.”
The windfarm's building schedule was put back because of bad weather. Work also stopped after a barge was damaged afer capsizing - crew had to be rescued from the freezing water.
The farm will generate enough power for 117,000 homes.
More than half the foundations are already in place.
The project created 27 new permanent jobs, which is expected to rise to 40.
well where do I start?? as a fisherman in the solway, these windmills on robin rigg are a huge disgrace. a mean what exactly is the benefit of them? why erect more when the ones at siddick are hardly ever used?? somebody needs there head looking because it is a complete waste of time and money. Our bills don't get any cheaper do they!!!

Well done Times & Star you played your modest little bit in ensuring that this project was implemented. At least it will keep you all busy out over the next few years trying to justify its existance in the face of the facts. Expect in the next year or so the truth to emerge over the hidden subsidies raised on every electricity bill to keep this very expensive & very inefficient power station operating. But more importantly expect the climate change scam to be revealed. Hope you stay in business that long.
