Rescue teams fight fell fire

MEMBERS of mountain rescue teams from Cockermouth and Keswick helped fight a fell fire on Grisedale Pike yesterday afternoon.
The fire, believed to have been caused by a lightning strike, quickly spread and formed into two fronts which reached up to the wall on the north ridge of Grisedale Pike.
Eighteen members of the Keswick team and nine members of the Cockermouth team helped Keswick Fire Brigade, forestry workers and national park rangers beat the fire out.
The Keswick team were in attendance until 6.30pm, with a few members remaining for a further period to check that no ‘hot-spots’ remained that could re-ignite.
On Thursday, the Keswick team was called to the assistance of a fell walker who had collapsed above Swirls on Helvellyn. It is thought the walker had a fatal heart attack. Thirteen members brought the casualty down the fell.
