THE ACHIEVEMENTS of three volunteers from the charity Sailing for the Disabled will be recognised at a presentation in Workington today .
Sailing for the Disabled is one of the three charities which Allerdale Mayor Allan Caine is supporting during his year in office.
The charity provides opportunities for people with disabilities to take part in the sailing and running of the Maryport yacht The Pride of Cumbria.
Thomas Brown, Barry Little and Sonia Neil will be presented with awards, having successfully attained their RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Day Skipper Certificate.
This qualification will enable the charity to continue to provide experiences and opportunities to disadvantaged groups in the community.
Around 700 people have been on board the Pride of Cumbria to date, including people with disabilities, skippers, crews and young trainees.
Ged Doran, chairman of Sailing for the Disabled, said: “With their help, we can continue to introduce young people to a world far apart from their own and raise awareness and understanding of the difficulties some people face in everyday life.”
Coun Caine said: “All of the volunteers give freely of their time to help the charity. It is important that we recognise the invaluable contribution they make to the charity and to the wider community. I’d like to congratulate them all.”
Sailing for the Disabled is always looking for volunteers with experience of sailing to join the crew, as well as business sponsors.
