VIDEO Thousands of people at Maryport carnival

TV REALITY shows, in-jokes and traditional themes with a twist were all found at Maryport Carnival on Saturday.

Around 5,000 people turned out to watch the event.

The day was cloudy but the heavy rain showers of the previous couple of days stayed away, to the relief of carnival organisers.

Entries included a World War Two dancing troupe from the Butcher’s Arms.

Maryport’s Got Ne’e Talent was a take-off of the national TV talent show while Norton’s Dancing Miss-Fits was the Maryport version of the search for a Nancy for the West End production of Oliver.

Jim Cunningham was one of the clowns in a colourful display by Allerdale COSC.

Mr Cunningham, 76, last took part in the local carnival 71 years ago, dressed as a drummer boy.

The carnival provided its share of TV and movie characters, including a sprinkling of Shreks and Harry Potters.

There was even an attempt for Maryport to show its version of the lucrative and flamboyant Indian movie scene with Netherhall Rugby Club’s Tubby Ga’s T’ Bollywood.

There was no bunting this year because of cost but the town council turned on the Christmas lights on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights to add to the atmosphere.

Maryport Mayor Mary-Claire Telford said the town council wanted to help. She also paid tribute to the carnival committee.

She said: “They are such a small group now and they work so hard.

“The town should be grateful to them.”

Isabel Burns, who organises Cockermouth Carnival, said Maryport’s event was a carnival for everyone, not just children.

She said: “It is unique because of the number of clubs and pubs who take part.

“I come every year because it is truly a great day out.”

Best adult on foot: The Wizard of Oz.

Best adult characters: Has Been Queens.

Best youth organisation: Oliver.

Best female adult group with music: Hairspray.

Best male adult group with music: Life of Bryan.

Harrison Patterson Memorial Trophy: Hairspray.
