Soldiers say thanks

WEST Cumbrian servicemen have presented members of Workington’s Royal British Legion Club with a thank you gift for their shoeboxes of useful items sent to people serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The club, on St John’s Court, has sent more than 130 boxes so far.

Club stewardess Pat Lavin, 50, and part-time staff member Lesley Jackson, 44, of Richmond Croft, Westfield, Workington, organised collections and the packing of boxes and sent them to the troops.

After returning from a tour of duty, Workington born soldiers Corporal Stewart Graham, Lance Corporal’s Dave Watson and Barry Devlin, and Sergeant Andrew Prest, of Camerton, handed over a token of their appreciation.

Lesley said: “We have been given a statue of a soldier as a thank you.”

Goods can be left at the club bar at any time and Lesley can be contacted on 01900 63792.
