A GROUP of Workington women who have spent five years repairing what had been a broken community were hailed at a glittering awards ceremony last night.
The women of The Next Generation group, who are making a world of difference to the Frostoms estate, were among the big winners at the prestigious Cumbria Community Awards event held in Penrith.
They won the Stronger Communities Award after being voted for by readers of the Times & Star.
The group was started by Frostoms residents Alyson Hodgson, Diane Light and Linda Parker.
Alyson said: “We’re thrilled to bits; we’ve worked really hard in the community. The way it has come on in the last few years is fantastic.”
She added: “There was no community spirit at all where we live, and the children wanted something done about it. They decided they didn’t just want a play park, they wanted something for everybody.”
The group has set up fun and educational events for the entire community, and reinstated the Moss Bay carnival this year after a gap of eight years.
