Bypass delight for Distington villagers

THE NEW Lillyhall to Parton bypass has delighted villagers living alongside the old A595.

The dual carriageway opened last week after two years of work and bypasses Distington’s Common End, taking 17,000 vehicles away from the single carriage road.

Colin McBride is a barman at The Castle pub at Common End.

He said: “The new bypass makes a world of difference and it’s a lot more pleasant for pedestrians.

“There are people who walk to school with their children and before they would get 15 minutes of carbon dioxide in their lungs.”

He said he could hear some noise from the new road, but said that it did not cause too much disturbance.

“The only thing you can hear is if one of the bigger vehicles goes along the road. If it’s just motor cars, then it’s like a drone in the background,” he added.

Common End resident Heidi Skelton, 36, said the bypass did have a positive effect on life in the village.

She said: “I have no problem getting in and out of my house now. It’s a lot safer for people to go out.

“We used to get disturbed by traffic heading to Sellafield at 5am or 6am, but now it uses the bypass.”

She added that some goods vehicles did still use the road if they were going to Cleator Moor, but it was less common than before.

But another villager, who did not wish to be named, felt the lower number of vehicles going through Common End was causing problems.

She said: “I think there are still a few people who use it like a rat run. They think that there is no traffic and so it will be quicker.

“It’s rather annoying because of the amount of money that has been spent on the bypass. I think the only thing that will stop them is to put the speed limit down.”

The A595 Lillyhall to Parton bypass opened last Wednesday.

The three-mile stretch of new road bypasses the villages of Distington and Howgate and should greatly reduce the 17,000 vehicles that travelled along the old A595 on a daily basis.

Have your say

This might sound silly, but whats the speed limit on this road? I always thought it was 70mph on a dual carriageway, but my mate says that because theres no dual carriageway signs its just 60mph?

what a waste of public money this road is. the only people benefiting from this road is people that live at common end,to waste millions to divert traffic past 30 or 40 houses is a disgrace it should of bypassed parton aswell and came out at pelican its still a nightmare trying to get out of parton if not made worse by that stupid waste of money
