CURWEN Place is the new name of the pedestrian area outside the HSBC bank on Pow Street in Workington.
The name was finalised by Allerdale Borough Council officers yesterday after it was suggested by both Workington Town Council and Workington and District Civic Trust.
At a town council meeting held on Monday, town councillor Melvin Petit came up with the name, which was seconded by Robert Hardon.
A marble plaque has already been commissioned and is now being designed.
A spokesman for Allerdale council said: “Following the selection of the name, work has been commissioned to create a plaque embedded in marble, which will feature the name Curwen Place and a brief description of the artist’s inspiration in the creation of the idea of the square and the column.”
Similar plaques will be placed for the other pieces of public art in the town centre.
