WEST Cumbrians Geoff Smith and Jill Perry have been selected as Green Party candidates for the European Parliament.
The pair will be the only Cumbrians, of any party, to contest the European elections.
They are two of eight Green Party representatives for the North West.
Mr Smith, 59, of Crosby, an ex-headteacher, local government officer and shopkeeper, is now semi-retired and works part-time for Flimby’s New Balance factory.
Mrs Perry, 51, is a former foreign language teacher, who now makes jams and preserves for Wild & Fruitful. She lives at Bullgill.
Green Party members across the North West could vote to select candidates and the pair said they were amazed to both be selected.
Mrs Perry has been an environmental campaigner for 18 years, helped found the Allerdale Green Party in 2004, is branch secretary and co-ordinator for West Cumbria Friends of the Earth and a Gilcrux parish councillor.
Mr Smith is also one of the founders of the Allerdale Green Party and is now North West regional agent and Crosscanonby parish councillor.
