Visitors appear to be easy targets

ON APRIL 29 my daughter and I came to Cockermouth to visit Wordsworth House.

As I was feeling tired, my daughter dropped me off, giving me a time limit of 45 minutes to visit the house. Meanwhile she left to park the car.

At 12.45pm we returned to the car to find a parking fine attached timed at 12.35pm. We’d parked at 12.15pm.

Having never come across parking disc zones before, we enquired at the nearest shop to be told, we should have had a disc noting time of arrival.

While we both agreed the idea of disc parking is sensible, why haven’t the council properly explained on the disc, what visitors are expected to do.

You cannot obey a law if you don’t know what the law entails.

We went to the council offices to make an appeal, and were told it was up to us to find out.

Everyone we spoke to in the town, agrees a fairer way to explain to visitors, what needs to be done, should be carried out.

There were lots of complaints and moans from local people. They said: “What can we do?”

However, I suspect if the situation was rectified, the council could lose thousands of pounds in revenue from innocent visitors.

Again, the car owner is an easy target unable to fight back, or am I being too cynical.

To the people of Cockermouth if you want visitors fight back, or you’ll lose us.
