More cup glory for Elbra

ELLENBOROUGH Rangers’ avengers crushed Seaton 66-12 in the E Lamb & Son Amateur Cup final.
It was a sweet success after the previous week’s defeat by the Workington side in the SJR Building Contractors Cumberland Cup semi-final.
Both sides inevitably lacked several regulars who were unavailable because of previous professional experience.
And the player perhaps most missed was Seaton player/coach Jon Roper, who was unable to bring Super League knowledge gained with Warrington and Castleford to the pitch.
Seaton were also unable to call on three or four other players, while Elbra’s coach Gary Murdock, with a bigger squad, was able to make light of the loss of such as David Whitworth, Paul Gorge, Jason Moore, Barrie Murdock and Steven Stoddart.
The writing was on the wall by the 14th minute, by which stage centre Jamie Watson had bagged a brace for Ellenborough, hooker Kyle Lofthouse also crossing and scrum half Eddie Robinson goaling each effort from the touchline.
Seaton, not helped throughout by poor ball control, rallied when winger Paul Hopper squeezed in at the corner, second row Brett Phillips adding the extras, but Elbra reasserted their authority when stand off Steven Brough forced his way over in the last minute of the first half, Robinson again improving.
Second row Paul McGee, belying his veteran status by playing the full 80 minutes, took the man of the match award for a superb performance highlighted by a hat-trick in the second period - all powerhouse efforts from 10 metres out - while centre David Sewell crossed shortly after the restart and towards the close.
Watson completed his hat-trick in the last few minutes, while loose forward Craig Holdsworth and Lofthouse also nipped over.
And Robinson added five conversions for a nine-goal tally as Ellenborough set a new record score for the 15-year-old competition.
Seaton had to settle for a consolation try by loose forward Adam McGlasson which Phillips improved.
Elbra now travel to Fylde tomorrow for the Bartlett’s Insurance Champion of Champions final against Bank Quay Bulls of Warrington.
At the same venue Wath Brow Hornets meet East Hull in the Ace Insurance (Europe) Barla National Cup Final.
