Colin Armstrong’s team had found it tough going in their opening five matches, after losing a couple of key players from last season’s team.

But the win over Seaton, who had been lying third, should have worked wonders for their confidence.

Cockermouth led 12-10 at the break, in what was a tight affair throughout, eventually edging the win 17-16.

Ryan Burns, Lee Wood and Mark McMillin crossed for the hosts, Gareth Skillen adding two goals and a decisive drop-goal.

Andy McGlasson, two, and Chris George touched down for Seaton, Duncan Moyle on target with both conversions.

Hensingham claimed their second league win of the season, in another close match at Glasson. The rivals were tied 10-all at the break.

Reece Fox led the way for the visitors with a brace of tries, Craig McAvoy and Jamie Sharp, who also weighed in with three goals, adding to their tally.

Broughton Red Rose drew level with Maryport on the league ladder thanks to a 28-6 success over their rivals.

Richard Campbell (2), Wayne Bell, Jonathan Ritson and Brian Parks crossed for the home side, Mark Walker on target with four conversions.

Maryport’s solitary try came from Callum Robertson, Simon Pattinson goaling.

The top two, Kells and Ellenborough, both stuck to winning ways, though Wath Brow made Ellenborough fight all the way for the two points.

Their match was tied at four-all at the interval, Stephen Stoddart, with two tries and a couple of conversions, proving the difference.

John Addison also added a four-pointer for last season’s champs. Gary Clarke crossed for the Hornets, Brian Miller slotting a penalty.

Kells had their game at Distington wrapped up at the break, when they led 22-0, adding a further four points in the second half.

Ex-Workington Town centre Stephen McGrady grabbed a hat-trick, Carl Sice and Scott Lofthouse also touching down, and Tony Burns landing three conversions.

Three of the top four in division two maintained their promotion push, while Salterbeck, who went in to the day in second place, had no game.

Leaders Lowca had little trouble disposing of their own second-string, 56-6. Lee Allen claimed a hat-trick and Carl Ennis and Lee Morgan bagged braces.

Dave Colley, Keith Campbell, Dean Morgan and David Scott also crossed. Gary Johnstone booted seven conversions. Billy Dalton replied with a try for the A-team, John Sparks goaling.

Flimby kept up the pressure with a 28-0 success against Seaton A. The hosts led only 8-0 at half-time but pulled clear after the break.

David Torley (2), Tony Eave, Grant Underwood, Carl Grima and Ben Harrison all touched down, Graham Thompson slotting two goals.

Maryport A ensured their Kells counterparts did not have it all their own way, going down 18-16 after leading 12-6 at the break.

The rivals shared six tries, with an extra Ross Gainford conversion proving the difference. Lewis Tinkler, Darren Seeds and Lewis Smith scored for Kells, Gainford slotting three goals.

Darryl Parker claimed two tries for the visitors, Ben Waugh adding a further four-pointer and two conversions.

Frizington maintained their mid-table place thanks to a 20-10 victory at Great Clifton. Peter Fowler, two, and Lloyd Clemence touched down for the visitors, Wayne Burns notching three goals and Kurt Lee one.
