The Cumberland Football Association has named Netherhall U16 as its Charter Standard Club of the Year.

Cumberland FA development officer, Ben Snowdon, said: “They have been a real benchmark for quality within the county and are deserved winners of this award”

Netherhall will now represent Cumbria in North East regional heats against winners from Durham, Northumberland and Westmorland county FAs.

The club was formed last year by parents Carole Beattie and Eileen Telford as there wasn’t an U16 side in Maryport for their growing sons to move on after playing for lower age group clubs.

Netherhall U16s subsequently became the first club in Maryport to gain Charter Standard status and now they’ve been rated the best in the county.

The side, which is coached by Nigel Porter, who devotes a great deal of time to the club, plays in the U16 league of West Cumbria Youth Football and in their first full season - the one just finished - they came fourth.

The Charter Standard is a best practice guide on how clubs should develop, safeguard children, improving behaviour and create opportunities for everyone to play football.

Charter Standard clubs must have a qualified coach, a welfare officer, screening policies for volunteers, signed codes of conduct, and an anti discrimination policy.

n Netherhall will be holding an informal training session on July 15 5pm at Netherhall School astro pitch. Anyone interested in siging on for the 08/09 season chould come along or ring Carole on 01900 816413.
