North West’s big fish cast a line at Silloth

THE NORTH West England Sea Angling Championships, sponsored by Dobies, Luke Holliday Roofing and Grahams gun and tackle, were held at Silloth with 81 anglers fishing two hours each side of low water.

This year’s championship was fished in four zones with anglers allowed to rove within the zone they drew, with all fish measured and released.

Conditions were perfect with sunshine and no wind and produced a total of 436 fish - 157 flounder, 237 dab, one eel and one dogfish - for 12,316 centimetres from 45 match cards returned.

The Penn sea league final was fished at Silloth with 36 of the top anglers from all over the British Isles competing.

Several of the competitors stayed over and fished the championships and Dave Roe from Dublin made it the perfect weekend winning the Penn final and winning the championship with a bag of 23 dab for 574 centimetres collecting the Gregg trophy and £500.

Ian Brookes from Birkenhead took second place with 21 dab and a flounder for 538 centimetres collecting £200 and third place was shared between Colin Bell from Newcastle with 15 dab and four flounder for 512 centimetres and Jeff McAllister from Workington with 15 flounder for 512 centimetres each received £50.

Iain Stenhouse from the Wirral had the longest fish, a flounder 45 centimetres, he collected the Matthew Brown trophy and £150.

Michelle Smith from Whitehaven won the ladies’ championship with five flounder, two plaice and a dab for 263 centimetres collecting the Jake Kelly Trophy and £30.

The junior championship was won by Michael Brookes from Birkenhead with 11 dab for 264 centimetres collecting the D Huck memorial trophy and £30.

Runner-up was Aaron Holt from Maryport with four plaice for 128 centimetres taking the Francis J Rumbles trophy and £20 and third place went to James Gribbon from Silloth with two flounder for 74 centimetres winning £10.

There were four zone prizes each receiving £25.
