Poor catch taken off Maryport Prom

THE North West Sea Angling League’s latest competition was a measure and release match on Maryport Promenade on Sunday.

Fifty-six seniors and nine juniors took part fishing four hours up to high water.

Conditions were reasonable with a light northerly breeze blowing and calm saes.

Unfortunately, the fishing proved to be poor with half of the competitors failing to catch and only a handful of anglers managed to catch more then two fish.

A total of 54 fish were recorded - 25 plaice, 15 flounder, two bass and one dab for 1,521cm.

Jeff McAllister, for Maryport, won the match taking two bass, two eel and a flounder for 193cm.

His best fish was the heaviest of the day, a fine bass measuring 63cm and was weighed as 6lb 2½oz.

Ricky Holt, a Maryport junior, took second with five plaice, a dab and a flounder for 177cm, which also gave him first in the 13-16 year old junior section.

This result moves him in to second in the championship, first place in the B league and to the top of the junior league.

Third went to Howard Knudtson, for Workington, with three eel and two plaice for 138cm.

Ben Cain, for Workington, was the only other junior to find a fish taking second in the juniors with a 28cm plaice.

Maryport won the team event with 567cm, well ahead of second-placed Workington with 428cm.
