Anglers bask at Mawbray in a rare bit of sunshine

THE NORTH West Sea Angling League held their latest competition at Mawbray on Sunday afternoon with 41 anglers fishing four hours up from low water.
Conditions were ideal with bright sunshine and a moderate south westerly wind blowing and produced a total of 58 fish – 39 plaice, eight flounder, seven eel, three bass, one dab - for 461b 5oz.
Jeff McAllister for Maryport recorded his second successive win, taking four plaice, a flounder and a bass for 6lb 11½oz. His bass weighed 2lb 6½oz and was the heaviest fish of the day.
Robert Holm of Maryport took second with six plaice for 4lb 8½oz and Jimmy Smith for Workington took third with four plaice and a flounder for 4lb 4¼oz.
Maryport won the team event with 16lb 4½oz, opening up a 10-point gap over their closest rivals, Workington, who were second with 10lb 11½oz.
Thomas Smith of Workington won the junior competition with a 10½oz plaice.
Lewis Neesham for Maryport came second with a 9½oz eel and P Vaughan for Maryport came third with a 9¼oz plaice.

l WORKINGTON SAC fished its latest match on Sunday at Mawbray with 14 seniors and three juniors fishing.
First was Jimmy Smith with five fish, four plaice and one flounder for 4lb 4½oz. He also had the heaviest fish, a plaice of 1lb 1¾oz.
Thomas Smith won the juniors with one plaice for 10½oz.
Anyone going on the trip to Scotland is reminded that it is a prompt 6am start from the Jack Club.

l HARRINGTON SAC latest match was fished on the North Heads, St Bees, on Saturday night fishing from 8pm to midnight.
Strong winds, driving rain and heavy seas made fishing extremely difficult for the nine anglers who took part.
Only four fish – three codsand a rockling – were caught due to the dreadful conditions.
Joint first were Barry McGlasson and Darren Pape with a cod each weighing 4lb 10oz.
Third was Phil Sibbald with a cod weighing 3lb 6oz and fourth was Alan Hill with a 8oz rockling.
