Poor turnout for league jubilee fish

THE NORTH West Sea Angling League held a competition on Maryport Promenade on Saturday.

Fishing was from one hour after low water and up to four hours as part of the league’s 50th-year celebrations.

Disappointingly, only 21 anglers turned up – 17 seniors and four juniors – possibly due to the weather conditions with heavy rain forecast and a strong north westerly wind blowing which made fishing difficult.

The anglers did manage to bring 41 fish to the scales – 22 plaice, 12 eel and four flounder for 23lb 12oz.

Ken Williamson, from the Workington club, won the match, taking five plaice for 3lb 4¼oz.

Ian Murphy, also from the Workington Club, took second place with three plaice for 3lb ¼oz, with his best fish at 1lb 6oz taking the heaviest fish prize.

Ricky Holt, from the Maryport club, won the junior competition, taking three plaice for 1lb 8½oz, with Lee Murphy, from the Workington Club, coming second with one plaice for 13¾oz.
