Anglers fourth open competition

WORKINGTON and District Sea Angling Club held their fourth annual open competition on the beaches between Harrington pier and Maryport pier on Sunday morning.

The match was fished as a heaviest fish competition with competitors only allowed one fish to score.

The fishing was from half-an-hour before low water and three-and-a-half hours after, and attracted an entry of 75 anglers (66 seniors and nine juniors).

Saturday’s gales and heavy rain fortunately cleared, leaving a bright cold start to the day and a light northly wind.

Hopes were high for catching codling. Unfortunately, they failed to show again in any number, with only two coming to the scales, and catches were made up mainly with dogfish and plaice.

Andrew Pickering from Whitehaven took the first prize of £30 with a bass weighing 3lb 12½oz.

Second place went to Tom Whitehead from Maryport with a dogfish of 2lb 13oz, collecting £198, and third place went to Tom’s son Craig, who collected £132 for a dogfish of 2lb 9¾oz.

The junior event was won by Darren Scott from Workington with a plaice of 11¾oz. S Holmes came second with an 11oz plaice and L Spencer from Workington took third place with a dab for 7¾oz.

Workington’s next match is a North West Sea Angling league match at Grasslot on Sunday, fishing 4-8pm.

New members are welcome and should contact Jimmy on 01900 871545 or Howard on 01900 68614.
