Two wins at Seat How Galoppen

THE seventh event in the Cumbrian Galoppen series was held in Whinlatter on Seat How, a fast maturing piece of forest.

Intricate contour detail and limited visibility produced challenging courses for the two hundred and fifty competitors.

Two wins were recorded by West Cumberland Orienteering Club members, with a very impressive 56.32 for Lewis Taylor on the 5.9km - with 250m climb - blue course.

Even with a two-minute wobble at control six, where Taylor missed the control in a marsh, he still managed a two-minute winning margin.

Paul Eaton had a confident run on orange to keep his hold on the league top spot.

The 7.1km brown course was dominated by WCOC runners, all earning valuable Galoppen points.

The Thursday club evening event at Scale Hill also attracted a great turnout, although the sea of bracken on the open fell top certainly made the runners work.

John Taylor had a strong run to take the top spot on the long course, with son, Lewis, missing a control.

The short course provided an exciting race with Rosie Watson taking second while Katrina Hemingway produced an excellent 10th.

Joshua Selby found a two-minute margin on the easy course ahead of Philip Jennings and Bramble Park.

The summer series continues throughout July and August with venues in West Cumbria providing some challenging terrain.

These are ideal events for juniors making the move up from the schools orienteering. Details can be found on the website www.wcoc.co.uk and close to each Thursday on the answerphone 01768 895539.
