BorderLiners given the boot in annual needle match

THE Thursday evening event hosted the annual needle match against BorderLiners, the neighbouring club based in Carlisle.

West Cumberland came out victorious, retaining the Golden Gauntlet trophy for another year, while BorderLiners went home with the Battered Boot.

The event was held on Latterbarrow near Ennerdale Bridge, which was newly mapped.

The marshes, rocky ground and contour detail gave interesting route choices for the large turnout of competitors.

Alan Irving had a strong challenge from Neil Hamblin taking second, and with David Spencer putting in a good performance to take third.

Times were close further down the field, giving excellent competition. BorderLiners were unable to match the strength in depth on both courses and were forced to accept defeat.

Paul Eaton had another great run to take third place on the short, showing real potential for the future.

Hannah Bradley and Katrina Hemingway had a close race with Bradley just coming out ahead, with a margin of just over a minute.

The easy course attracted a good turnout. Simon Byers took an impressive sub nine minutes for the 1.8km course through Lowther Park forest.

Just one more event left in the summer series before the start of the autumn park races. Details can be found on the web at www.wcoc.co.uk

The park races will give fast, easy orienteering on local parkland.

These races are an ideal opportunity for progression from schools orienteering, with winning times close to 12 minutes.

The Brand-Barker family are off to Northern Poland, to take part in the World Mountain Bike Championships next week, representing Great Britain. The event is being held at Stare Jablonki, and will include sprint, middle, long and relay disciplines.
