ELBRA Athletics Club hosted the third Raymond Thompson memorial 10 kilometre event on Wednesday, August 6.
The event started at Netherhall Rugby Club in Maryport and 150 runners entered on the night, including competitors from Cumbria, Yorkshire and Scotland.
The runners were set on their way by town mayor Mary-Claire Telford.
The route is undulating and runs from Maryport to Dearham into Crosby via the notoriously steep and dangerous brow, then back to Netherhall Club.
The event received sponsorship from Maryport Town Council, plus two local businessmen John George and Norman Greggains.
Ricky Lightfoot made his intentions clear from the gun and led from start to finish winning the race in fine style and smashing the existing course record in doing so.
Second runner home and first vet 40 was Ricky’s club mate and training partner Brian Taylor with Mike Scott from Border Harriers chasing hard and securing third place. First lady honours went to Philippa Wakefield, representing Border Harriers.
Elbra AC will host the County Cross Country Championships later this year.
