GB team member takes long course

COOL and dry weather gave good racing conditions in Setmurthy Forest near Cockermouth for the regular West Cumberland Orienteering Club Thursday evening event.

Recent extensive thinning allowed the planner to find fast routes through the trees.

British squad member Helen Winskill, who has recently moved to the area, stamped her authority on the event with an impressive 40 minutes 52 seconds for the 4.6km – plus 165m climb – course.

A clean and strong run through the terrain gave Winskill over three minutes from second-placed John Slater.

Andy Warner took the short course from Lynne Thomas, with a four-minute margin. Once again, junior Paul Eaton had a clean run to take an impressive sixth.

One or two controls on ditch junctions proved quite difficult to locate for some, adding significant time to their runs.

Kate Skinner coped well with the forest to lead the 2km easy course. With limited visibility the forest can provide a considerable challenge, and all the juniors showed the skills needed to record excellent times.

The summer series ends and makes way for the autumn park racing series. These events have short, relatively easy, but fast orienteering courses.

Details of the various venues and parking can be found on the website www.wcoc.co.uk – just turn up and have a go.

Quite a few club members attended the White Rose event over the bank holiday weekend at Barns Cliff Forest near Scarborough.

Other notable results were: 4th Katrina Hemingway (JW4), 3rd Andrew Bradley and 5th Martin Skinner (M40L), 3rd Joyce Hemingway (W45S).
