Juniors take the honours on Coledale

THE last event of the West Cumberland Orienteering Club summer series produced a great competition on the fells at Coledale.
A score event in which the aim was to collect as many controls as possible in 45 minutes meant a delicate balance on route choice and taking overtime penalties while collecting that last control.
Charlotte Watson, having returned from her summer tour in Scandinavia, showed her superb fitness level with a very close second.
Phil Winskill, a strong elite runner, only just managed to take the win by five points from Watson.
Rosie Watson also managed a great win on the short, with a 40-second margin over Roger Jackson.
Matthew Atkinson was just another 12 seconds adrift, after a fine performance. Nathaniel Green was fourth on the night and after a series of consistent results throughout the summer ended up junior male winner on the short course.
Katrina Hemingway was junior female winner, while the senior positions went to Ged Hagan and Kim Leslie.
The long course league was won by John Slater, with Charlotte Watson taking the ladies’ title, and Lewis Taylor the junior male title.
Philip Jennings just edged out Joshua Selby as winner in the easy league, and Esther Moore just winning ahead of Niamh Hunter.
Attention now turns to the autumn park races with short, easy and very fast orienteering on open terrain.
Details of the various venues, with parking etc, can be found on the website www.wcoc.co.uk or close to each event on the answerphone 01768 895539.
This is an ideal time to try the sport and for those who took part in the school events to race on areas away from the playing fields.
