Teams do well in national relays event

WEST Cumberland junior orienteers made up two teams for the highly competitive national Peter Palmer Relays, this year held at Middleton Woods, Leeds.

With a minimum of six runners in a team and starting at 5am the event is a tremendous challenge.

The first two legs, run in the dark, saw Lewis Taylor (pictured) go through the spectator control in the lead on the first leg.

This team, the Ennerdale Elite, also included Charlotte Watson, Rosie Watson, Hannah Bradley, Paul Eaton, Chris Brand-Barker.

They put in some outstanding performances but unfortunately a mispunch put them out of the running.

The Borrowdale Best team of Chris Hemingway, Nathaniel Green, Katrina Hemingway, Michael Green, Alice Rae, Esther Moore, Heather Wornham and Graham Hemingway also performed well against the tough competition and got a mid-table overall position.

The PP Relays always brings out the best in the team and this year was no exception with many outstanding performances to their credit.

The weather turned out dry and sunny at times, quite unlike the rest of the country knee deep in water.

Plans are already shaping for the 2009 trip to Sutton Park near Birmingham.
