Regional win for Irving at Swindale

THE fellside at Swindale on the side of Haweswater was the venue for the latest regional event.
Orienteers from all over the north of England produced a great competition. The mild weather and soft ground gave perfect racing conditions.
West Cumberland’s Alan Irving had a great win on M40L, 65.34 for the 8.9km with 305m climb course.
Debbie Thompson also won on W50L in 43.35, for 4.7km, 140m climb. Ben Emerson took the win on JW5S, as did Roger Thomas on M45S. Overall the club had a great set of performances.
The Thursday evening club event enjoyed fine weather and a great race around the streets of Keswick and Crow Park.
The narrow passageways needed careful map reading while at race pace. The navigational challenge was considerable, with the complex street pattern giving many surprises on the various routes.
Steve Birkinshaw just edged the win on the 2km course, just six seconds ahead of Chris Brand-Barker. Phil Winskill, after a small wobble on one control took third, a further 16 seconds down.
An intense race gave great competition with places separated by a few seconds. The short course was dominated by Adam and Sam Pagett. Third went to Glenda Moore.
The autumn series continues, with the venues and parking available on the website www.wcoc.co.uk and on the answerphone 01768 895539.
Short, easy courses make these events ideal for youngsters moving up from the schools competition.
