Sunshine run for Derwentwater Ten

IN SHARP contrast to the storm-lashed Original Mountain Marathon, Sunday’s Derwentwater Ten took place under blue autumnal skies.

328TH: Cumberland Fell Runner Dave Lees clocked 1.25.48

Just over 450 runners completed the circuit of Derwentwater with Andi Jones, of Salford, taking first in 50 minutes 19 seconds.

That was over a minute outside the course record set by Kenny Stuart, of Keswick Athletic Club, in 1986.

The Keswick club organises the event which was being staged for the 49th time, an unbroken run dating back to 1960.

And it was graced this year by British running legend Ron Hill, now aged 70, who came 308th in a time of 1.24.24.

Hill ran in two Olympic marathons and set a marathon world best of 2.09.28 in 1970.

He has run every day for the last 44 years and recently achieved his target of competing in 100 different countries.

As usual Sunday’s race, which was sponsored by Mizuno athletic shoe company in association with Pete Bland Sports of Kendal, started in Keswick Market Place.

The route took the runners down Borrowdale to Grange and then back up the other side of Derwentwater to Portinscale and on to the finish at Keswick School.

From the start Jones put on the pressure, chased by Stephen Hepples of Loftus AC and other good quality athletes.

Jones covered the first mile in four minutes 38 seconds but paid the price later on. It was his second time of winning the event.

In the women’s race Rebecca Robinson of Kendal AC had her fourth successive win. She was 16th overall in 57.47, only 45 seconds off the women’s record held by Lorna Irving of Edinburgh.

Mathew Fraser won the Grant Horsburgh Cup for the first Keswick AC finisher.
