Norman leads the President’s Day field

THERE was an excellent turnout for Raymond Mackay’s President’s Day at Cockermouth Golf Club.
In the men’s section the winner was Norman Fleming with 41 points.
David Holliday had the best 0-9 score of 39 points with Gary Simpson (37) the runner-up.
Ronnie Walker (40) had the best 10-17 score while John McGuire (39) was runner-up.
The best 18-28 score was posted by Howard Bouch (31) and club captain Joe Gill (31) was runner-up.
Best past president was Geoff Bartle (36), nearest the pin was Graham Forbes while the Maurice Lyons Trophy went to Howard Bouch.
In the ladies’ section winner was Joan Gould with 32 points.
Best 0-20 was Pat Wimpress (30) and runner-up was Margaret Bird (29). Best 21-36 was Doreen Mattinson (32) and runner-up was Mary Worthington (28).
The best past president was Lillian Stephenson while nearest the pin was Sandra Boyes.
Tom Lucas won the junior section with a score of 41 points.
Best 0-12 was Rory McGreevy (41) and runner-up was Mathew Wilkinson (34). Best 13-28 was Dara McGreevy (38) with Tom Williamson (36) runner-up.
Best non-handicapper was Sofie Parker and best putter was Jordon Eland.
Thirty-eight pairs entered the open mixed greensome and the winners were John and Lynn Butler with 76-62 nett.
The best visitors were Andy and Gill Jones with 86-67 and second were Graham Hudson and Liz Sumner, also with 67.
Third were Liam and Margaret Bird (67), fourth Paul Newton and Christine Brown (69) and fifth Charles Neale and Sandra Boyes (70).
Winning nine balls for a Two were Mike Reid and Joan Gould, Steve Sanderson and Betty Nuttall, Andy and Belinda Rigby, and Richard and Pat Wimpress.
Forty-five competitors vied for the Centenary Trophy and the winner in the men’s section was Graham Forbes with 40 points, beating the runner-up Chris Neale with a better back nine score.
The winner in the ladies’ section was Karen Telford with 32 points and the winner in the junior section was Matthew Wilkinson with 38.
Other good scores included Andy Stott (37), Russell Skillen (37), David Eden (37) and Jim Beattie (36).
Winning five balls for a Two were Forbes (15th), Neale (ninth), Stott (17th), Eden (ninth), Ian Carruthers (17th), Andy Sedgwick (17th) and Alf Miller (ninth).
There was some excellent scoring in the JW Bowe Trophy and the winner was Mark Richardson with 69-64. The runner-up Chris Wilson (72-65).
Other good scores included David Eden (82-66), Geoff Bartle (78-66), Steven Telford (75-67), Liam Skillen (72-67), Neil Hadfield (77-67), Niall McGreevy (75-67), Steven Shaw (79-67) and Jim Beattie (77-67).
Winning five balls for a Two were Phillip Hardingham (17th), Jonathan Nixon (ninth), Skillen (ninth), Andy Stott (ninth) and Tom Williamson (15th).
The Jennings Shield was won by Matt Skillen with 75-64 and the runner-up was Liam Bird (74-65).
Other scores included Chris Wilson (72-65), Liam Skillen (70-65), Barry Denham (70-65), Trevor Pearson (86-66) and Adrian Murray (81-66).
Winning 10 balls for a two were Denham (sixth), Chris Neale (fourth) and Skillen (ninth).
The Skylarks played a match against the Maryport Bankenders and narrowly lost to the visiting team by 4½-3½.
