Close finish to senior champ’ship

THE Seniors Championship at Cockermouth Golf Club produced a close result.
Brent Connell with 83-76-159 took the title just one stroke ahead of John McGuire (80-80-160).
Other notable scores included John Moyes (78-82-160), Ronnie Walker (80-81-161), Phillip Risino (78-83-161), Raymond Donohoe (80-82-162) and George Macdonald (84-80-164).
In the nett competition the winner was McGuire with 63-64-127. The runner-up was Raymond Donohoe (67-69-136) followed by Ronnie Walker (68-69-137) and Phillip Risino (67-72-139).
Macdonald had the only Two, at the ninth, bagging 13 balls for the effort.
Forty competitors entered the August Monthly Medal and the winner was Matthew Wilkinson with an excellent score of 70-60.
The runner-up was Chris Neale (69-65) followed by McGuire (83-66), Geoff Bartle (80-67), Donohoe (80-67) and Andy Sedgwick (76-68).
Winning six balls for a Two were Ian Carruthers (17th), Neale, Stephen Shaw , John Waite and Geoff Wright (all on the fourth).
The winner of a Single Stableford Competition was Tomas Lucas with 44 points, the runner-up Chris Neale with 43. Other good scores included Matt Skillen (42), Richard Scott (42), Rory McGreevy (41), Andy Williamson (40), Sedgwick (40), Paul Newton (40) and Neale (40).
Rewarded with six balls for a Two were Skillen (10th), Liam Skillen (ninth), Nigel Stewart (ninth), Stephen Shaw (15th) and Trevor Pearson (ninth).
In the ladies section, the Herbert Jackson Trophy was won by Pat Wimpress with a score of 89-69. The runner-up being Dorothy Pritchett with 101-74.
The Dolly Dixon Trophy was won by Joan Gould with 85-67 and the runner-up was Jane McGuire with 99-72.
The Cancer Trophy Stableford was won by Sandra Boyes with 36 points.
The final Wednesday evening greensomes was won by Joanna Hadfield and Pat Barker.
The Cecil Leitch team played their semi-final match at Barrow against Kirkby Lonsdale narrowly losing 4-3.
The Lady President’s Day winner was Joan Postlethwaite with 92-68.
The Round Table trophy was won by Christine Brown with 96-74.
Beginning in heavy rain and ending in sunshine, the Skylarks lost their away match against Workington Beckwatchers by 4½-3½.
In the first Jumble of September, nine players turned out and the winner was Peter Allen with 39 points. Second was Ron Smith (38) and third Jim McLaughlin (34).
The following week 19 players turned out for a Jumble and the winner was Peter Allen with 38.
Second was Colin Waite (37), third Peter Inglis (36) and fourth Des McNicholl (36).
