Three moved up from junior to senior black belt while the fourth achieved her junior black belt.

John Peck, Jamie Starkie and Scott Weir have trained with the club for over nine years achieving junior black belts a couple of years ago.

They have continued training and now have their senior black belts - the first time the club has achieved this.

In addition junior Sophie Weir, the sister of Scott, gained her junior black belt.

The 12-year-old is the Cockermouth club’s youngest female black belt.

She joins a list of 23 black belts in the club, of which over half continue to train on a weekly basis and pass on their skills to other students.

Sensie Gene Mealey, 7th Dan black belt and former Great Britain coach competing in Europe, remarked on the high standard shown by the students, who, he added, were a credit to the club.

Combat Jujitsu Academy will in November be celebrating its 10th year in Cockermouth. It offers self-defence classes for all ages of student taught with the traditional values of discipline combined with the power of enjoyment.

The club trains on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7pm at Cockermouth Sports Centre. Training resumes after the summer holidays on September 8.
