A fistful of medals

WORKINGTON Chojinkai Karate club returned from the organisation’s Grand Prix inter-club competition at the Penrith Leisure Centre with a bag full of medals.

Inter-club competitions are held three times a year when members compete in kumite (fighting) and kata (form).

Workington’s Demi Hayton had great success winning a bronze medal in kumite and four gold medals.

Her first gold came in the peewee kata section then, along with fellow team members Jazmine Ramage and Deanna Burns, she won another in the peewee team kata beating fellows club mates Liam Dawes, Lauren Jones and Tyler Ramage who took the silver medals.

Tyler Ramage joined sister Jazmine and Hayton in the peewee team for the kumite competition and won gold, beating fellow club mates Lauren Jones and Deanna Burns who took the silver medals.

Hayton then had to step up a level to join Marc Dawes and Grant Park in the brown/black belt team kata event where they won gold.

Park and Dawes both then went on to win bronze medals in the individual kumite event with Dawes also winning a bronze in individual kata.

The Ramage sisters, Jazmine and Tyler, kept the kumite medals in the family with Tyler winning gold and Jazmine bronze.

Not to be outdone by their children John and Debra Ramage teamed up with clubmate Amanda Pears to win the adult team kata event with John and Debra also both winning bronze medals in the individual kumite events.

John also won the bronze in the individual kata taking the Ramage family’s medal count to 11 for the day.

Deanna Burns and Kirsty Mellon both won bronze medals in their individual kata events with Lauren Jones adding to her collection with a bronze in the basics competition.

Shannon Roe completed the Workington club’s medal haul winning the silver in basics and the bronze in kumite.

The Workington Chojinkai Karate club trains in the Workington Leisure Centre on Monday and Thursday evenings at 6pm with classes for new beginners for all ages starting now.

The club has about 25 members but is part of a 600-member organisation with clubs based locally in Workington, Whitehaven, Egremont, Cockermouth and also as far a field as Penrith, Carlisle, Dunfries, Hexham and Newcastle.
