Racing Mr Bean at Le Mans

IT WAS another busy weekend for local motorsport with local drivers travelling far and near to take part.
Eddie Farrell and Robert Gate took Eddie’s E type Jaguar to Le Mans for the Le Mans Classic races.
Running in category 4, they took part in three races with 70 other cars from the same period.
They finished an excellent 30th overall, a super result given that they were up against Ford GT40s and Ferraris.
One of their main rivals in a similar car was actor Rowan Atkinson who is a much better driver than his Mr Bean image.
He had a similar E-type to Eddie and finished in a similar position. Also taking part were Colin and Helen Elstrop who took their TVR to a great 29th overall in the same category.
Also rallying were several other locals who headed to Kames for a rally sprint event. This is a new type of event using the sprint circuit and rally roads to create four stages which were tackled four times each with the best run at each to count.
John Willis took his MG metro up and was first in class while Barry Lindsay (Peugeot 106) was first in the 1600cc class. Geoff Harkness was less lucky with his Corsa having clutch problems.
The TJ Services Northern Speed Championship headed to Scammonden Dam in Lancashire for round six of the series where the WMC members provided two thirds of the entry.
Full results are not yet available but I understand it was a good event. Peter Garforth was the quickest of the Cumbrians and took second overall.
This weekend’s action is a little slower. MG Cumbria has their Classic Tour of Cumbria starting at Crooklands near Kendal and finishing near Carlisle after a tour of the Cumbrian coast.
Mean while Kirkby Lonsdale MC have their Cars the Star Classic Show at Heaves Hall near Kendal on Sunday. This will feature a downhill soapbox derby amongst other attractions.
