Tight finish to Northern Speed title race

THERE is another hectic weekend of motorsport as many of the championships draw to their conclusion with vital points to be won.

Over at Harewood, the BARC run their two-day hill climb festival with the Greenwood Cup tomorrow counting for the TJ Services Northern Speed Championship.

On Sunday MG Cumbria run the first Reivers’ Raid Tour into the Borders but the Lindisfarne Rally on Otterburn Ranges has been cancelled.

With dropped scores coming into play in the Northern Speed Championship, the scoring in all the classes and overall is still very close.

The Harewood classes are always very strange with the usual suspects often spread over two or three classes. Class A sees Chris Boyd’s Westfield up against the Metro of Mike Hunter and the MG Midget of Jim Evans.

In class B there is a host of Caterhams including James Cummings and the Westfield of Jim O’Neill. Class C is all WMC with The Coleman family’s Striker and Charles Graves’s Tiger while Angus Buchan is out in the Sports Libre class in his Radical.

Peter Garforth has a tough time in class I for the small racing cars but his main aim will be on championship points.

Mark Hemingway is making a rare appearance in his Force in the very competitive class for racing cars up to 1600cc.

The road car classes are well supported with 12 WMC runners, Sally and Martin Peacock have their Peugeot, as does David Wiggins while the historics are in the hands of Mike Garstang (Mini Cooper), Rob MacGillivray (Turner) and Simon Down (Lancia Fulvia).

In the bigger road cars we have the MG TFs of Dennis Hope and Paul Rigg, the MG B of Peter Sewell plus the Anglia of Nigel Cardale.

Stewart Middleton has his Datsun 240Z in class 3 along with the Boxter of Simon Butterfield. Harry Moody has his Westfield in class 5 and Colin Sutherland his Spitfire in class 6.

Many of the local drivers will make a weekend of it and stay for the Sunday event as well. Harewood is a very well run hill and despite having a large entry usually manages to get plenty of runs in.

MG Cumbria have again got a good entry for their latest run, the Reivers’ Raid which starts at Gretna and heads up into the Borders via Hermitage Castle to Mellerstain for lunch and then a run through the forests back to Carlisle for dinner.

Entries have come from all over the country. Entry forms are also out for the Christmas Cracker Run in December and already a third of the 90 places are taken.

Wigton Motor Club are celebrating record membership again, having exceeded their previous year’s figure for the sixth year running, having already reached 530 members this year with four months to go and more members joining every week.

WMC were MSA Motor Club of the year on 2005 and three times regional winners of the same title. With a wide range of events and championships and a top quality monthly magazine the club has exciting plans for the future.
