Northern Speed reaches climax

THE TJ Services Northern Speed Championship reaches its conclusion on Sunday with the Kames Classic.

And most of the classes and indeed the overall title in the Wigton MC-run championship are still up for grabs.

The two classic classes are already won, with Colin Sutherland taking C1 in his Spitfire and Peter Sewell C2 in his MG B.

However class L for the Sports Libre cars is still wide open with Angus Buchan in the Radical in the lead but Chris Boyd could catch him in his Westfield, while Paul Bowness has an event in hand which could net him second.

There will be added interest with Bill Kirkpatrick having an outing in his Locost.

Martyn Stott and Mike Hunter are duelling for M1 in their Elise and Metro respectively while M2 is wide open – Terry and Darren Coleman, Harry Moody and Colin Birkbeck are all in with a shout.

Robert MacGillivray is leading R1 in his Ro5R but will be pushed hard by Martyn Peacock in a 106R and Stephen Palmer in his Micra.

In R2 it’s a Mazda versus MG battle between Kevin Hamilton and Denis Hope.

Peter Garforth already has the racing car class sealed but will be more interested in the overall title where he is under pressure from Colin Birkbeck’s Caterham.

There are also a number of extra entries with a good field of single seaters – Drew Dawson making a comeback in the DJ Firehawk.

There are also three generations of one family entered, with veteran Mike Murchie in his Fiesta while son Colin and grandson Kyle share their Locoblade.

The event starts at 10am with timed runs from 1pm. Admission is £5 per adult.

Last weekend Kirkpatrick travelled to Belgium for the Spa Six Hours, part of the three-day historic festival, and with Mark Griffiths came 42nd out of 100 starters in his MG B.

Over at Croft, Robert Gate took his E Type Jaguar to fourth in the Cockshoot race a little in front of Eddie Farrell in his similar car.

Sad news on the rally front with the Countdown, Hexham and Westmorland rallies all being cancelled.
