Full entry for Kames Classic

THE final speed event of the season took place at Kames on Sunday in quite superb weather, particularly in view of the dreadful day Saturday was!
Despite a cold start the Ayrshire venue was soon bathed in sunlight as a full entry arrived for the Wigton Motor Club run Kames Classic, the final round of the TJ Services Northern Speed Championship.
The usual slick WMC organisation saw two practices and a timed run before lunch and then a further three timed runs after lunch and it was all wrapped up by 4pm.
The Kames circuit has had several thousand pounds of investment in it this year and is looking in very good shape with new fences, toilets, mown grass and new Tarmac on the rally roads.
Drew Dawson was in a class of his own, finishing nearly four seconds clear of his nearest challenger in his DJ Firehawk to take fastest time of the day. Keith Wells was second, chased by Peter Garforth in his Hawk ATCO who was happy with third as it gave him the Northern Speed title. Angus Buchan was not that far behind in his Radical, winning the Libre class, while Colin Birkbeck dominated the M2 class for kit cars to finish clear of Harry Moody’s Westfield.
Chris Boyd and Bill Kirkpatrick battled over second in the Libre class finishing in that order, while Martyn Stott won the modified road car class. There was a great battle in the small classics with Robert MacGillivray’s Turner (Frog Eater) beating Colin Sutherland’s Spitfire by 7/100s of a second.
Melvyn Hartley ran out the winner of the big road cars in his Porsche Boxter, while Kevin Hamilton’s second place wrapped the class in the championship.
Ant Lomas was the winner of the smaller road cars in his Peugeot 106 from the 206 of Martin Peacock. Kathy Hick was fastest of the three ladies, competing in the Ginetta G27.
One of the Aberdeen drivers sent an email to the organisers after the event: “I am just back from the sprint at Kames today and this is a quick note to all the organisers and marshals who made this a great event to participate in.
“Two practice and four timed runs and the car on the trailer by 4pm, great value for money and a really great event.
“This was my first Wigton event but it certainly will not be my last.”
That really completes the speed season for the year with the Northern Speed Championship kicking off again on Good Friday which this year is in mid-April.
