Reds again say ‘no’ to ground-sharing

DEFIANT Workington Reds have reiterated they would not move from Borough Park after Tesco’s go-ahead to build a new supermarket paved the way for a super stadium in the town.

Allerdale council is expected to pocket an £18 million bonanza from the sale of land to Tesco and is looking at two options to transform the town’s sporting landscape.

One would see a new 10,000-seat stadium on the current Derwent Park site, to be shared by Reds and Workington Town RL Club.

The second would lead to the existing football and RL stadiums being developed to a high standard - and it is this option that Reds are keen for the council to adopt.

Chairman Humphrey Dobie said: “We are not going to ground-share, so if the council is going down that route, it’s the end of our involvement, and we’ll start to look for other sources to do up Borough Park.”

He maintained that it would be “completely ludicrous” to move to the proposed new facility, as it would mean Reds no longer had control over their own affairs.

Last weekend Reds completed the double over Hyde Utd. Jonny Wright and Michael Reed both netted for the first time since the beginning of September.

Unfortunately, Darren Edmondson’s side couldn’t stop play-off chasing Barrow on Tuesday as the Bluebirds took the game 1-0.

This weekend Reds host Solihull Moors, who are three points and two places behind Reds.

Kyle May will be in contention after quickly recovering from a knee injury, which was feared would end Reds skipper’s season.

Reds are now 10 points above the relegation zone and with just four games to go, will be mathematically safe with a win tomorrow.

The two teams drew 2-2 earlier in the season.
