Aussie recruit touches down

WORKINGTON Town have signed Aussie ace Bryce Poisel. Town's newest recruit touched down at Derwent Park earlier this week and he’s ready for action.

The 24-year-old last turned out Down Under for Jim Beam Cup outfit Shell Harbour Marlins – NRL club St George Illawarra’s reserve-grade.

And after training every day since arriving, he declared: “I’m dying to play. I can’t wait to get out there.”

Poisel, who has German ancestry, joins Town until the end of the season.

“They wanted me to sign for next year as well, and if it all goes well after a few weeks, I’ll do that,” added the scrum-half, who is also comfortable at stand-off and hooker.

Poisel was recommended to Town by former coach Peter Walsh to the delight of current boss Dave Rotheram.

He said: “Peter’s been a good friend to the club over the years. He recommended Chris Young to us, who’s done well.

“Bryce also sent over a DVD of his playing highlights and I was very impressed.

“He’s an organiser and has good speed. He’s an old-fashioned scrum-half who can lead a team downfield, make a break or back one up, and he’ll help our organising.”

nTOWN’s highly rated loose forward Rob Lunt is unlikely to play again this term.

Lunt had been one of the key players boss Dave Rotheram was pinning his hopes on this season.

But he has been sidelined by a back problem over recent weeks and two bulging discs have now been detected.

Chairman Dave Bowden said: “It’s probably going to end his season”

Lunt, 23, scored 10 tries in only 23 appearances last season, when he was one of Town’s top performers.

And he crossed four times in 14 appearances this term before disaster struck.

Rotheram added: “This season I was looking to build a team around Robert, his brother Shaun, Liam Campbell and Carl Forber, who play in the key positions.

“But Robert’s been troubled by injury and I feel really sorry for him. He’d been doing a really good job for the team though is now looking at a lengthy time out.”

There is better news on former skipper Neil Frazer, who underwent major back surgery over the weekend, which it had been feared could end his career.

Frazer is unlikely to play this season, but is likely to make a complete recovery.
